Commonwealth citizens serving in the UK Armed Forces need to be aware of their immigration status in UK upon discharge from the UK Armed Forces.

If you do not have Indefinite Leave to Remain, you become an illegal immigrant and as such, are not entitled to free NHS treatment, nor technically able to work, pay income tax, etc.

This news article illustrates the consequences of the law, as it currently stands. This Commonwealth Soldier served in the British Army for 10 years, left, did not apply for Naturalisation and worked in Civilian jobs for 9 years, paying taxes, national insurance, etc. He now faces a £27k NHS bill due to his unfortunate circumstances: https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/may/18/british-army-veteran-faces-27000-nhs-hospital-bill
