Can any serving Drivers on here give an overview of the Spec currently, as in day to day, week to week tasks and life. Also does it warrent quicker promotion due to being an unpopular Specialisation. My sons currently looking at Specs and is considering it as Clerks is currently oversubscribed and seems to be a quick route for promotion and progression onto a specific specification that requires a JNCO rank.Hes also currently in the "ping zone" and does not want to end up with Sigs. Cheers.

I have known quite a few Ds over the years and they all loved being in the branch. However, I recently read a post from someone who was pinged for the branch and is based at CTC and just sees himself as a glorified taxi driver.

Plenty of civvy qualifications to be obtained, which will never see him out of work in civvy street and no yomping with a heavy bergen, as there's always room for a camp bed and other creature comforts! From a personal point of view I would take drives over sigs and clerks branch.

    As for promotion, no idea.

Sigs is probably the better ping, I’m in a general duties drives draft at the moment, (got drafted instead of pinged) and the drives branch is very miserable..

I believe I was that glorified taxi driver!

Horrendous branch if you want to do soldiering but yes there is potential for a comfortable life. If he wants fast promotion at a cost of his soldiering skills then yes it would probably be a good fit

That unfortunately the case with a lot of undesirable SQs. You can lose the soldiering side of being in the Corps and is particularly prevalent in drives, clerks and a few others. However, I would say that if you take a ping, then as long as you keep your phys up to standard then you're halfway there.

Years ago they used to have what was known as special entry chefs and clerks, aimed at filling billets that were always short. You went through the complete RT package and then on pass out you went off to do your K3 or C3 course. There was no changing your mind, as you had agreed to it in the recruiting office and you had to complete a RoS before changing over.

I know of one guy who joined as a special entry chef and at the end of RT, supported by the TT, applied to stay as a GD Marine, but was refused. He went off and done his K3 course and spent a couple of years in the branch, but kept his phys and soldiering skills up to speed as far as practicable with being a chef. After his RoS he applied for selection and spent several years working as an operator, before returning to a GD role and being promoted up to WO2.

I guess it all depends on the individual!

But he gets first dibs on all the Gucci kit!

When I was in the Far East I used to do guard duty for a stores rating and the payment was $10 and something off the shelf!

I did drives myself, got some good qualifications out of it.

There are lads who don't want to be there and it shows, so don't let your lad be one of them. Stress to him that its a means to an end.

Promotion can be quicker but he doesn't neccessarily need to promote, just receive a YES on his SJAR. Get your lad to speak to the branch liar that he wants to join and see if a YES is enough, that way he won't have to have a return of service as a Cpl in a branch he doesnt want to be in.
