    Edwards here former Nod (Week 14) I wrapped basically as I got back with the ex (excuses!) thinking seriously about rejoining!

    I left in 06' and spent part of my time in the glorious 924 "Hollywood" troop...

    Any questions re Phase 1 fire away though it was over two years ago! :noworry:

    Give us a general of your experience in that stage, i.e. the highs and the lows, the dos and the donts...

    Hey bud.

    Yeah that's the troop. Their training team were a bit cheeky *text deleted* then again perhaps my first ones were chilled. By cheeky I mean supposedly all the Cpl's and the Sgt were hand picked, their Officer Orlando Rogers was younger than me! As a result they had to set a seriously high standard to all the viewers.

    Right where do I start. Ok, when I joined RT I had been unemployed for ages so the routine and self worth if that makes sense of RT I actually enjoyed.

    There is a LOT of info and kit to take in and get used to gents. Best advice I can give is to avoid getting sucked into the collective troop panic and crack on. The training team are not expecting you to have perfect presentation and admin in weeks 1-3, despite what some of the lads will have you believe.

    Let's get one thing clear as well. There are *text deleted**text deleted*heads in RT. Plain and simple, lads I would literally cross the other side of the road from If I saw them now. On the other hand there are lads I still speak to on facebook now who I'd go drinking with.

    Phys wise, please please don't do what I did and basically get mega fit for PRMC then attempt to get even fitter for RT. I did this by distance running basically. Don't bother. The way phys is conducted down there is unlike anything you will have experienced before and IF I went back down I'd go in probably slightly under PRMC fitness. Enjoy your remaining civvie time! You'll miss it!

    Worst ex I thought was Hunters Moon. 4hrs sleep in 5 days *text deleted*. Feet cut to bits about 60 miles of yomping.

    I was in RT when the weather was scorching mind so I missed the harsher cold aspects. All the early ex's were easy. Marshall Star was the first real wake up call I almost passed out on the yomp back I was that heat exhausted and dehydrated. I realised early on I did not have the build for yomping *text deleted*. Running Man was cheeky but this and Marshall Star were massivley exacabted by the heat on Woodbury, which must have been in the high 20's.

    Best bit of RT - Hitting the bottom field first time and seeing muscles sprout up on muscles as a result. The gym sessions were cheeky but you felt awesome having done them. Also, last but by no means least the feeling of pride when you tell someone your a Marine recruit has to be experienced to be believed, particularly if you were unemployed before like me.

    Be aware gents that there are tried and tested lines the training teams use.

    Don't take it personally. I clocked this down there but a lot of the younger troop members got flustered. By this I mean things like between weeks 3-6 you'll get the old "this is not good enough men" white glove routine. It will ease off a little then dependant on the team then re-appear when they think you've got too cocky *text deleted*. For example during the infamous parades between weeks 4-6 they will ALWAYS find something "dirty" in the grots. You just have to accept it and wait it out until week 8 CO's inspection.

    The Cpl's are all sound once the Nod/NCO barrier gets let down a little. The Sgt's tend to be more aloof, the Officers you will rarely speak to personally.

    *text deleted* your team will look on you far more favourably if your seen as someone who is honest and gives it everything "wants to be here" as opposed to the Admin ninja who sees everyone off behind closed doors (and you'll meet a few of them).

    I made the lethal mistake of going home on the weekends after week 8. It felt like such a relief but coming back was horrendous. I deffo would not do that again.

    alright mate, thanks for the post. What are the requirements to pass the gym test pass out on week 9?

    When I was there it was Level 11 Bleep, BFT in under 10:30, 3 rope climbs with a makefast, I think 6 pullups, 40 pressups and 60 sits I'm not 100% on those last ones but I smashed them, it was my CV that was gash at that point *text deleted* overtrained before I went in. My RT start bleep was 12.6 my Week 9 one was 11.4 !

    cheers, whats BFT and what does it include? I can't understand how you can overtrain before you go in(or being too fit), in the above post it says you are going to be going in next time with fitness just under prmc level, but by doing this how are you going to be getting any higher on the bleep test at week 9?, when during week 1-9 your doing exactly the same exercise as everyone else. Just trying to understand if there were 2 recruits beginning RT and one was fitter then the other on day one, your saying that by week 9 the less fit recruit will now be the fittest? how would he overtake if they have both done the same amount of CV?

    Hi mayte it's a fair point. Ok, let me explain. In RT you do barely any "distance running" as such. It's not a normal occurence in RT to do say a 5 mile run in RT. Usually it's circuit training (the gym), mixed with 800m sprints (camp circuits). You do the odd 4 miler here and there. When I was training to go in, I trained like a distance runner, doing 30 miles a week etc. I was fine for the first two weeks or so, then of course the way my CV system had adapted, when the miles started to taper off so did my fitness.

    Trust me mate the lads who start off the fitest in RT don't often end up as it in the end.

    *text deleted* best way to train would be a rugby/medium distance running routine. Lots of short intense runs, plyometrics and jumps. The odd longer distance here and there.

    BFT = Battle Fitness Test - once a month you do a PRMC style run on the same course in the same time although you start doing it in boots.

    Cheers. It's probably in the wrong place so I dunno if a Mod wants to move it?

    One thing that I would do as well would be to sort out all my kit as much as I could before RT starts. Trouser twists, knives, torches etc. *text deleted* you pay for everything gents, the kit shop in Exeter there must be loaded, seriously.

    Have a look on the lists here and take as much as you can, it will save you loads of time instead of scrabbling around Exeter on your precious days off.


    Another thing is to get a skinhead before you go down to RT or you'll be lining yet more pockets in the form of the barber, who happened to tell me that he part owned a helicopter when I was there, times are tough for him eh!

    CTC isn't some big rip off but you do spend a lot of money there wether it be on kit or extra scran.

    Thanks for all the info mate, and good luck on going back... confirmed some of my suspicions not to do too many long distance, but do short and fast runs with stuff like HIIT etc.

    Sorry to hear about the woman pulling you from something better haha

    No probs. I'm from South Wales mate.

    Yeah deffo get your sprints down, flat and hills. Vary the distance between 20m - 800m. Do the odd longer run for endurance but for the first 9 weeks the main things that build your fitness in RT are camp circuits, marking time in the gym (keeps the HR up) and all the running around you do in camp and the swimming of course.

    If I had to pick a longer distance it would be say 4 miles run at best effort. Forget about the 10 mile jogs.

    BFT is a 1.5 best effort as per PRMC, the only other distance runs are a 4 and a 5 miler in about weeks 4 and 5, and we didn't do the 5 miler as the PTI was knackered from a 6 mile speed march he had done earlier *text deleted*.

    Ah yeh see before I went to RT I had a pretty crap existence with no job and no gf. That was one of the reasons I went, so the first few weeks were literally awesome for me with the structure. Then I went home on Summer leave met the proverbial piece and so it ended *text deleted*.

    Also I know this is an odd one but get your flexibility down as well especially your hamstrings and hip flexors/adductors. You don't stretch much in RT even though you desperatley need it. Also, stretching the hips will make it easier for you to get a good stride which is essential for the yomps.

    Ah alas no, I left after a week or two there I think they were in Week 7 when I joined and I left by Week 10. To be honest the camera guy seemed to hardly ever film when I was there. I did get asked to sign a form that would have seen my embarassing Week 9 drill passout but I'd rather not *text deleted*. Having the CO pick me up for not shaving (made me run back to grots and shave *text deleted*) was something I didnt fancy having on TV! :)

    They were a good troop from what I remember though, good lads but my heart was not in it at that point.


    Oh hair is number 2 mate, but to save any grief i'd say number 1.
    It will be easier to shake off when your doing the quick changes you will invariably get in the first 5 weeks.

    Also lads what i'd like to say is, just try and relax as best as possible when your there. For the first 3 weeks you have your lumi-tabs on (*text deleted**text deleted* shields) and you are excused almost anything so long as your intentions were good. The first few exercises are actually pretty enjoyable.

    Don't get dragged into a collective troop panic about anything in the first few weeks, as I assure you there will certain elements in the troop who resemble Frazier from Dads Army (we're all doomed!!) If you are good at admin help the lads wo are struggling, it will be noticed by the team.

    The troop grots you are in at first are horribly claustrophobic and that swinging door and mobile phone alarms will drive you nuts *text deleted*. The normal grots are much better. I hear the new nod block has been partitioned now?

    Remember the training team want you to pass out, but they will rarely show it. As a rule I found the DL's and PTI's the soundest. Our DL was actually really chilled out.

    Yeah. that makes sense to not go al out on the distance runs, and mainly focus on short and intense exercise. When you hoping to be back in training them mate?

    Welcome to the site.

    We used to have a thread with suggested additional kit but the current advice from CTC is don't purchase any extra kit, that isn't on the AFCO joining letter before joining as you may be wasting money, as suggested by foundation.

    The reason for this is that no two troops are the same & what may have been required a while ago, isn't necessarily relevant today.

    Below is an extract from the joining letter currently issued:

    PERSONAL ITEMS REQUIRED FOR ROYAL MARINES COMMANDO TRAINING


    General.

    All new recruits arriving at CTCRM are issued with the uniforms and equipment necessary for Royal Marines Commando Training, however, you need to purchase a number of personal items. Although the vast majority of these items can be purchased on camp, it is necessary to give you some guidance before you arrive.

    Civilian Dress.

    Recruits will spend the majority of their time in uniform, however, smart civilian dress will be required for the first few days, evenings, weekends and leave periods. When proceeding on leave or in the dining area or in the all ranks bar, ranks are NOT allowed to wear: patched or frayed jeans, track suits, shorts or offensive shirts.

    Maintaining Kit.

    All uniforms are provided, however it is the responsibility of all servicemen to maintain their kit. To achieve this recruits receive instruction.

    Additional Military Equipment.

    The emphasis throughout training is placed on a Recruit learning how to look after the equipment issued and to this end Recruits are discouraged from buying additional items unnecessarily. Additional equipment should not be purchased until advice has been sought from the training team.

    Hey all thanks.

    At the moment I haven't got any immediate plans to rejoin as I am running a small business now. If it goes tits up in this recession, Lympstone here I come *text deleted*. Yeah rejoiners cannot opt out at all, but to rejoin and then want to go again is pretty pointless although I understand it does happen.

    Ninja stoker is right gents, it's been two years since I was there and a lot changes down there in that time. The only constant is your desire to get the lid, which I can assure you will have to be constant throughout!

    The £3000 thing, I'd be suprised if that ISN'T true. Seriously, come 5 o'clock there are about 20 troops of bored Nods (600 men) plus the trained ranks all in there *text deleted* don't forget Lympstone as well as training Nods does a lot of specialisation training for Bootnecks. (A lot of my old troop mates have been back already *text deleted*)

    Yep, I'd be surprised if the turnover was anything less than £1000 per day- £3000 seems a reasonable figure given that the bar takings and snacks are all part & parcel.

    It's rather interesting to hear from those that pulled out of training for the sake of their partner - Would you say that with the benefit of hindsight that you did the right thing at that time?

    The reason for asking is that from a recruiting perspective, the majority of individuals that leave under similar circumstances subsequently regret it, so your take on it would potentially benefit those that follow.
