Mark Donaldson, VC, Australian SAS Regiment, was honoured with the Victoria Cross for his actions during the fierce Battle of Khaz Oruzgan.

The 35-year-old was on patrol with Afghan and US forces when they were ambushed by a larger Taliban force.

After being targeted by machine and grenade fire, Mr Donaldson deliberately exposed himself to fire from the Taliban to draw attention away from casualties.

His heroics allowed members of his patrol to move casualties to cover and then onto nearby vehicles.

Mr Donaldson then crossed open ground and under heavy fire helped carry an injured Afghan interpreter back to the convoy of vehicles.

He administered first aid on the wounded interpreter and the patrol managed to break free from the ambush after two hours.
