    Thanks for that. All noted. What exactly is return of service? Assuming that means you can only change an SQ after 2 years?

    To awnser your question my mind is fixed on 42, really appeals to me! Again I know I cant pick and choose freely, and will go wherever with a smile on my face and get stuck in.

    @Ghost123

    You will be given a lecture and advice for your JPA. You will have a 'front page' on this front page you will put in your career aspirations, location/unit preferences, and what spec preferences you would like, and also any Plan B's.

    Make sure this is punctuated correctly, and informative, like a CV. When the people who look at manning, and job billets decide who goes where, ping people etc, having a good front page can work well in your favour compared to somebody who doesn't.

    Yep, that means you have to stay in a SQ for a certain period of time. Most are 2 years but a few are longer.

    Well unfortunately there can be no guarantees; you will have to hope you get through training and then 42 are taking numbers when you pass out. If J Coy is your aim you might be able to do this as a second draft GD, but don't quote me on that!

    As @Jaykay2343 said you will get advice on how to sort your preferences out when you get to a unit.

    It's fine, I don't mind answering. PM if you want to ask anymore.

    The forum is here for precisely this reason, ask away.

    Interestingly (for some perhaps), RMR Other Ranks no longer specialise unless they join the RMR with an SQ, or so I'm advised by those who know - nowadays they are GD.

    Don’t wish to open the floodgates here and flood a certain member but what about RMR OR ranks having a punt at SBS (R). Or is that more of a transfer than a SQ?

    It's both in reality. All trained rank reservists can apply for SBS(R) - technically it's the only specialisation available to RMR personnel.
