Hello all
I know this might not be important to me but I am just wondering do you get to choose after training what commando / regiment you are in?
Thanks Ryan

Yes and no.

You can put your preferences. But at the end of the day, you go where the Corps needs you.
If your a Diamond, you have more of a chance of getting your preference.

Same with the Paras, you can select a preference but at the end of the day, it's where they need you.

The corps does offer more selection in role and units though. I knew lads in the Paras who spent years in the same section. Where as in the corps you could get a draft every 2-5 years.

It seems like you have an annoying friend that keeps putting the corps down in your ear? I knew a lad like that in college many moons ago. He would try and slag me off for joining the Marines and not the Army as a Commando. And would regale all sorts of wonderful stories that were utter sh!te.
He still works in the local Asda.

Funnily enough I bumped into the GD Career Manager at an internal event last week in Portsmouth and we had a good old chat about drafting preferences and specialisations.

As stated you can state a preference but the needs of the Corps can take preference over the desires of the individual when needs must.

What was interesting is the Sergeant said that he was more than happy to field direct calls from all trained ranks from Kings Squad and beyond to discuss drafts and career opportunities. Trouble is that people are often lead to believe they shouldn't call him direct or think they'll get "stitched-up" with something they expressly didn't want.

Not so, apparently. As long as you keep a civil tongue and put your case across, he'll do his level best to get you where you want to be. Ring him up and drain down about how seen-off you feel, then the "ginger-hair gene" will kick-in and you'll rip yourself off.
