Hello Good afternoon,
Just a query When you come to the end of RT is it like the army with line infantry regiments where you put your choice of battalion by preference or is it They'll stick you where your needed subject to availability and manning?

You put preferences in but it's all dependent on whats going on in the Corps and where the gaps need filling.

I got my last choice if that helps. Funnily enough had the best time at my first draft so wouldn't even worry about it

In the interest of full disclosure, you have 8 draft choices after RT now. According to the most recent lads who have joined our unit, these are the traditional 40,42,43 and 45. And the new choices of CLR, 30, Poole and I want to say CHF. If you end up in the latter four out of training, it won't be as a swimmer canoeist or helicopter pilot.

It'll more than likely be as a driver or some kind of logistics (stores) specialist. Just so you can manage your expectations.

Thank you,
It was just a query as come from an army background Just wondered if it was the same in the aspect of preference.

If to get drafted to one of the latter 4 units would you deploy alongside them in the support roles or whatever your capability is?
I understand you wouldn't be the door kicker or pilot But would you be deployed in support roles Such as for Poole - Driver or Log Spec, Radioman etc or with CHF would it be on the MAOT team in such support roles, So on with 30 etc?

I guess Being pinged for the less preferred jobs wouldn't be too bad i did read you do that you're looked on for whichever specialisations subject to manning.

Poole isn't a choice straight out of training. The choices are as follows:
40, 42, 45, 43, 47, 30, CHF and CLR.

So you won't be providing any direct support to UKSF and ita highly unlikely that you'll be utilised in CHF/CLR for anything other than a GD driver.

If you do end up in one of those roles though, your second draft will be to a fighting unit for 3 years as a GD rifleman.

My bad, I knew one of those was off. Its 47 instead of Poole. I won't bluff you, I dont know the ins and outs of how these units deploy. I'd imagine if they need GD support, there's no reason to suggest you wouldn't deploy alongside them

Are your choices set in stone? so for example, if you choose 45, 30, or 47 you will only be drafted into one of these? Regarding 30 Cdo, what is this element about? would you be doing surveillance and recon or just in the office doing reports? or do they operate more like a fighting unit?

Preferences will be given if possible, but you will go where the Corps wants you. More are now being drafted to CLR and even 30 Cdo, which are essentially specialist Units, where I guess you will be employed as a driver or similar job.

30 Cdo is a specialist Unit and unless you have an SQ, such as ML, or one of the IT jobs, then you will not be going out on surveillance or reconnaissance work.

In brief you'll go where needed. Yes if there are gaps at your first preference then you may get it. But the Corps comes first.

With regards to 30, I'd hazard a guess at no you will not be doing surveillance and reconnaissance work. That's specialist highly trained work. The reality is GD drives/stores. Sounds bad. However, if its true what was mentioned earlier about then getting 3 years GD in a rifle company you genuinely are lucky getting that

100% agree with @Rob20 if as a marine I was offered two years of a gash job followed by 3 years guaranteed as a GD rifleman in a fighting coy I'd have scranned that turd sandwich with a smile on my face.

@Rob20 I completely get that the Corps needs must be met as a priority, but is there any way to increase your chances of getting into your first choice draft?

I heard/read somewhere that Diamonds and Kings Badge recipients usually get to go to their first choice. Is there any truth to that?

Yep KB and diamonds from my troop got their first choice.

In reality though lads, the kind of guy the Corps attracts wont be too fussed where he's sent aslong as he's in a fighting unit. I got my last choice, 600 miles from home and missus. Absolutely loved my time there. Dont panic about it. You can be 5 minutes from home but still spend 6/7 months of the year abroad for example

Good to know that you would be guaranteed time in a fighting company if given CLR or CHF.

Was a bit worried about this as I have no interest at all in logistics etc. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that every role is important to keep the corps functioning, but would not have wanted to be lumbered in logistics. Especially as if you join the army as a Para, you'll be a para. I want to be a Royal Marine though so if there is guranteed time in a fighting unit after then that would be worth it I guess.

ive just left CHF, You would probably do your combat communicators course and assist the helicopters with ground to air comms. You won’t be doing anything green role like 40,42 and 45 would be doing. Or you will go to CHF and be a GD driver working on the Tactical Refuelling Area driving a Jackal or Land Rover. . . . Yeah I know hoofing jobs at CHF eh :D

Just to be clear, I wasn't slagging off them jobs. I know they're important and sure they would be interesting when you do them. I would just want the opportunity to have a green role.

If you want green role jobs then you will not get them at CHF or 30 that’s for sure.

Yeah I'll be aiming for one of the fighting units but will see how it goes. Long way off training yet anyway

Can you stay where you get drafted to? For example, on the slim possibility that you get drafted to 42, can you stay there or do you have to move?
