Hi all, I'm turning 29 next week and have my heart set on joining the royal marines
, but by the time I'm fit enough and have gone through selection I'll probably be heading towards 30, if I was lucky enough to make it into the rm, how long realistically could I serve?

    Passed PRMC
Most RM’s serve for 5-6 years, you can extend this to age 40 I believe

I believe that extensions, in certain circumstances, can be granted up to the age of 55.

Mate of mine is in his later 30s and he is still going strong. I heard what he does, lads tend to want out as it’s a hard job but if you can do the job happy days.

    Iirc @Ninja_Stoker can verify,

RM have a open engagement til 40 or 18 years which ever is longer, which can be extended til 55. Return of service is 3 years which then you can hand in your 12 month notice to leave.

12 years initial contract, if you pass selection. Automatically extended to 20 years if you pass for Corporal.

I'm 56, hoping to be extended to age 60. No guarantee, but possible.

    Hi there Ninja:
Sorry to hijack the thread but, does this apply to reservists

What's the theoretical maximum age one could stay in, in the R.M.R?

    Best wishes

The RMR could, in theory employ you beyond age 52 depending on rank, specialisation and continued medical & physical fitness. There are Full Time Reservist contractsfor SNCOs, any branch, serving to age 60. In truth, however, I doubt there are many RM/RMR GD Marine 1st Class serving operationally as a rifleman beyond about age 44. There will be some, but not many.

As an older bloke looking to join myself (27 likely 28 by the time I'm in shape) this is quite reassuring. What are the odds on not being able to reach Corporal in those 12 years? I've seen older threads about rate of promotion and it depending on specialisation etc but could you shed some light on current trends please? Always pays to be able to plan out how long you can be in a job! Can you extend it beyond 20 years if requirements were there for your skills?

Also are there specialisations that are age dependant so older guys have no chance? SF for example I've heard rumours that you need to be beneath 28 years old and have 3 years service but what about other specialisations?

I've heard of guys over age 32 going for selection, passing, then being knocked back for being over-age.
