Just felt it was appropriate to post a introduction before overloading the forum with questions.
So hello I've been interested in joining the military in some form from a very young age and got kinda hooked on the Royal Marines for the challenge, ethos, history, travel and I've 2 granduncles who were in the Marines plus a whole lot of other reason which make the Marines much more different from any other unit. Been larking on this site for a age now great source of information and have been binge reading when i get the chance. I'm 16 and 7 months, have not started the application process and won't until I'm 18 and have done my leaving cert which so I have plenty of time to get my fitness up. So yeah that's my introduction :)

Can't seem to get a news link I was looking for one but anyway I heard that the IRA were making threats to the families of Irish troops in the British army and given the old history which someone people can't let go I always try not mention the marines

well lads, I am an Irish citizen and have just joined the forum today.... quick question... I tried to apply online today as a potential Commando but they sent me an email saying that I do not fulfill the residency criteria.. surely anyone from the Republic can join without undertaking the 5 year residency..? the website states..

"To join as a Royal Marine Commando you will need to be a national of Britain, Ireland or the Commonwealth.... If you're a Commonwealth citizen and want to join the Royal Marines as a regular you must have resided in the UK continuously for the previous 5 years, with no single period of absence in excess of 180 days at the point of your application. This residency requirement does not apply to citizens of the Republic of Ireland, Malta and the Republic of Cyprus."

I am rather disgruntled as I have been training hard for the Marines and I hope I can still join..? Can anyone shed some light here??

@Mr D *text deleted* mate, yes I contacted the Navy directly and they said that it is website issue that still has to be resolved ... I'm surprised they haven't fixed the problem...it's not like them to be sloppy... thanks again man...
