Hi all,

I have a guy trying to tell me that he was in the ARMY .. 29 Commando and was working with 45 Commando and that 7 of them got 'Rebadged' into the Royal Marines and became MARINES...

Personally i do not believe a word he has said... here is how it came about... I was talking to him and he knew i was in the RMR, he then said "*text deleted** got a green lid you know... I was in 29 Commando" Fair enough i thought untill i spoke to members of his class. they said to me "He said he was a Royal Marine, served in the falklands, was a chef, PTI and escorted people around the country" when i asked him about it he said he was working with 45 Commando and 7 of them got 'Rebaged' Into the Royal Marines and became Royal Marines..

I was just wondering if anyone could put some clarity on what he has said, wether it is possible or not to happen?

Highly, highly doubt it. Sounds like he's big-timing it.

An Army Commando (Royal Artillery or Royal Engineer) could only transfer to the Royal Marines Commandos by undergoing the full 32 weeks Recruit Training package.

Those transferring whilst still serving would be afforded a transfer of pay increment level but AACC does not negate the requirement to undergo RM recruit training.

Having just had a chat about this very subject today with the guy who facilitates all transfers & rejoins into the Naval Service (for the last decade), he advises that he's never transferred anyone from the RA or RE as a trained rank, which pretty much settles it with regard recent history.

Escort work? Way back in the early 1990s a PTI of my acquaintance, based at CTCRM, did Chippendale-style stripping and ?escort? work as a lucrative sideline. He was very popular with ladies of a certain age. :amuse:

I always hate to go against what Ninja says, I know at least three people who are currently serving who transferred without redoing training. One officer, and two senior NCOs. I currently work with one of them.

That said they were all relatively senior and special cases. I would not bank on this as a way of getting into the RM.

My guess is that in the case of SNCO's & Officers it would depend on their relevant experience & the role into which they're transferring within the Corps.

Certainly at Other Rank/GD Marine level within the regular service, RT is pretty much de rigueur nowadays unless the RA or RE 'transferee' has perhaps undergone Combat Infantryman's Course, AACC or RMR Phase Two or perhaps has SF experience - according to "my man" at CNR.

For every rule there's always the exception I s'pose, but for those yet to join, the only assured way of becoming a Royal Marines Commando is by joining as one.

For the OP, assuming the guy claims to have transferred a good few years ago, it may well prove to be the case that it is, whilst numerically unlikely, feasible after all.
