Is it worth learning to tie any sort of knots in preparation for recruit training with things such as abseiling? Thanks in advance for any replies.

You will be taught standard roping knots. It doesn't do any harm to acquaint yourself with rudimentary bits and bobs - including common boat-handling stuff, but it is neither expected or required.

No. You'll get taught what you need to know as and when required
Do they still teach how to tie a quick release knot for the bivvie cords? Or am I feeling my age with regards them using bivvie cords these days?

Wouldn't let us use Bungee's back then.

Knots are a life skill.

A sound basic is the reef knot.
Equally simple but useful is two round turns with a couple of half hitches.
Slightly more complex is the bowline knot. If you want to appear particularly clever learn to tie it using only one hand. :)
