not sure, but i am going to need a mirical to pass an eye exam. i read the first 2 lines fine (which isnt much- and should have been enough to pass) but my optician decided it was too little too late, so i am going to go to another opticians soon and try again- if i fail, i dunno what will happen! i cant even afford the monthly payments for eye surgery!! waiting a year is bad enough but paying for something i cant afford? the armed forces is my life! and im sorry, but the army is just not even in the question! nothing compares to the RM, its all i want out of life- really dont care about anything else!

and to top it all off my girlfriend told me 'i knew something would go wrong' and my mate just laughed!

my parents just got back from York and my dad asked me to describe the optician and was the same one he got- apparently he is a really bad optician and makes allot of mistakes with people perscriptions, he told my dad he had a detached retina even though he didnt-he told my dad he needs to wear glasses but my dad has never needed glasses! so im definately going to see a different optician and might complain to the manager in my local opticians!

If you do get the chance for another eye test go to the D&A in Carlisle, Not that far of a journey for you. I was in there for 30/40mins, they gave me a proper thorough exam. They checked each eye about 3 times and I still passed, even though my left eye is considerably craper than my right.

Dude, it's advertised as £375 per eye where I live....unless that's without hidden costs and stuff.

Anyway I feel your pain man, I have a nut allergy, and I've never had a reaction in my life, it's simple, I just don't eat nuts. I'm extremely fit and have been planning to join RM for years and now to be told I can't join because of a medical problem which is in fact a non problem is soul crushing. I'd say either appeal or find a way to pay for the surgery, because at least your problem unlike mine can be fixed, and if you don't you'll spend the rest of your life wondering what it would have been like if you joined.

Plus you have to prove your girlfriend and mate wrong.

depends which laser eye surgery you get i suppose, there are many different types, they failed your medical because of a nut allergy??? if i were you id have went absolute ape sh1t on them! thats just stupid! im sure enough they let vegetarians and vegans join up but fail you because you cant eat nuts? thats just bollocks that like! yea, fair enough they have high standards but come on! NUTS??? you dont even get nuts in the ration packs!!

*text deleted*, I know, I've even ate the *text deleted**text deleted*ing ration packs and they were fine, *text deleted**text deleted*s. I guess their reasoning is in a survival situation there could be nothing else, but it's still stupid as *text deleted**text deleted*, they can provide halal and kosher but not nut free? Eat my ass ! I'm *text deleted* get as many doctors and members of the forces as possible to write letters saying I'm fit for service, and if that doesn't work I'm *text deleted* go to the *text deleted**text deleted**text deleted** government and campaign for the rules on nut allergies to be changed, and if that doesn't work I'm *text deleted* be the prime minister and change it ! haha you should do the same man don't give up just yet, let us know what the results are if you go to another optician =).

sh1t man, i feel really bad now! *text deleted* been wanting to like bubble all day because i failed my eye exam, even though its completely reversible! *text deleted* been so stupid! the way i feel must be bliss for those who cant join because of something stupid that either hasnt or wont ever effect them or theyr performance! sorry people for saying stupid things like my dream is over! sh1t, i cant imagine what i would do if i was told i could never join! i would just go off the rails big time, end up as a druggy living on the streets scraping pennies for my next bottle of vodka! because thats how much the RM means to me! i would end up committing suicide if i was told i couldnt join ever! sorry to hear about that man!

*text deleted* i know! whether i squint or not its still unaided and i still read the first 2 lines (even though they are like the size of a door!) *text deleted* i mean, like i say, he told my dad he had a detached retina even though he didnt! and told him he need glasses even though he doesnt! *text deleted* i just wish people would make complaints and things and get people who are 'professionally qualified' to do these things and still make mistakes sacked!- but in terms of eyes- the slightest mistake is a major thing!

I truly have the utmost sympathy for your predicament, however my purpose here is purely to state the categoric rules, facts & regulations.

My advice is simply that you should only appeal against the findings of a visual acuity test if you have evidence to prove the eye test assessment is inaccurate or was conducted wrongly. In other words, a healthcare professional needs to back your claims before the medical results are reviewed.

Laser treatment is a completely different issue & is, first & foremost, not recommended as a means to gaining entry. Correct advice for those considering laser surgery is available in the stickies section.
