THE NORTH WEST COMES FACE TO FACE WITH ELITE ROYAL MARINES

Young people from schools and colleges across the North West of England will be getting down and dirty with Royal Marine Commandos this week (Tuesday 15 – Friday 18 July 2008).

The unique one day events will be led by the 25-strong Royal Marines Commando Display Team (RMCDT), and will take place at Thornton Manor Estate in Wirral. Transport to & from the event is at individual's expense.

The events include a whole range of activities on offer including abseiling, wall climbing, paintballing and survival instruction, along with other physical challenges aimed at highlighting some of the career opportunities offered by the Royal Navy’s elite fighting force.

They will even get the chance to go for a blast in a Royal Marines rigid inflatable boat, or RIB, on the Manor’s lake.

During the day, a whole range of activities are on offer including abseiling, wall climbing, paintballing and survival instruction, along with other physical challenges aimed at highlighting some of the career opportunities offered by the Royal Navy’s elite fighting force.

The one day events are aimed at those who have not yet decided a definitive career choice, however if you live in the North West & would like to attend, contact your nearest AFCO to see if there's any vacancies left - they are uasually over-subscribed but as it's the last week of term for many there may be a few places available. All people attending will have to complete an indemnity form (countersigned by patrent/guardian if under 18) and return it to your AFCO the day before you attend.

wish there was this kinda thing I was at school! We had soem guys from the army come in and do a nice presentation for us and set us all a load of challenges, one of the guys took me aside at the end and told me I had good potential and leadership skills, *text deleted* say I was quite proud and havent thought about anything but Armed forces since for my career!

The Meet the Marines events are a bit more spectacular than the standard presentation & team building activities undertaken in the schools - definitely worth a visit- they cost £10K's to stage.

I went on a meet the marines day about a year ago. It was an absolutely brilliant day out. I got to meet a number of Marines from 45 commando.
Going on the raiding craft is incredible, they do their very best to get you all soaked and as for the abseiling, you'll probably get to meet a few Mountain leaders at the top.
I also got to try out river crossing (marine style), paint balling (using RM fire and manoeuvre), unarmed combat (I had to fight a marine as no one else was big enough) and was shown all the weapons used and environments operated in.
The low point for myself was the turnout, it seemed to just be bratty little 13-15 year olds who thought discipline was a porn flick. I felt a bit bad as these guys had come all this way to run this event and the turnout was poor.

Anyway, if you can get to one of these events, I would definitely recommend it. They can answer pretty much anything you want to know.

:iagree: i went one of these a few months ago aswell and would definitly recommend it because it made me even more determined to get stuck in training and as said before the raiding craft ride is amazing. We also met the marine who is currently on gladiators and he gave us a good 'extra phys' *text deleted*. On ours we had the same bratty kids in their expenseive clothes thinking they wouldnt get dirty  but after each activity me and the other lads from my afco stayed to talk to the marines when the other lads went to the next activity (we just had to run to the next station quicker than everyone else *text deleted*). Sorry about the long post but if you can get on it then definitly do it.
