As of the 1st of April 2019 all new Army recruits must pass these new physical standards that have been in the pipeline for quite some time as far as I am aware. Officers still have to pass a bleep test and an obstacle course but press ups and sit ups have now been replaced.

I was wondering what peoples thoughts on this issue are? Would you argue that this is a step in the right direction as it seems to test more "true to life" physical skills that are required throughout roles in the Army? Or do people feel as if this is an "easing" of standards compared to say the Royal Marines which have a very gruelling "traditional" set of entry standards?

A cynic would say that it is mighty coincidental that the military wants more females in combat roles at the same time as they are “modernising" their phy assessments.....

I guess the fact is that all military personnel,be it a Bootneck or a Percy Pongo, are required to maintain a state of physical readiness. A level of phys standard that will allow them to meet the demands of military duty in any training or operational environment.

In theory, making assessments reflect more “realistic” demands shouldn’t be a bad thing.
They are trying to sell it that there is no lowering of the bar and it is all about reaching the same bar but by a different route with less chance of injuries.
I dunno though, what next.. they will be letting ladies join the Royal Marines next...

    oh oh -nailbiting-

You got two choices, the brexit thread (152 pages) or the women in the Royal Marines thread (2,758 pages long) - choose your poison.

They've been in for years: Royal Marines Band Service.

I generally avoid opening up the commando role can of worms here but it would muchly satisfy me if one of our own female forum users cracked it.

"The female of the species is more deadly than the male."
So resistance is futile anyway. Just my personal experience. :(

I’m really worried and all self conscious now that you all didn’t realise that I was joking.

I’ve ruined my brew now. It just tastes of tears.

    Oh don’t I know it.

I was once flying back to Brize

A female medic jumps up frantically and announces, "If I'm going to die, I want to die feeling like a woman." She removes all her clothing and asks, "Is there someone on this plane who is man enough to make me feel like a woman?" I stood up, removed his shirt and said, "Here, iron this!".

(Ok that’s not true, but I was once on a plane)

We are going rouge and dangerously off topic here oppo.

Let’s talk about phys, not sure if you sailor types have an equivalent though?

You know when you lot get all hot, sweaty and out of breath painting your big boats or long thick tubes full of seamen. It’s kinda like that.

I’m sure a royal phys monster will be along soon to pass judgement

I honestly don’t have a clue but I feel the whole change coincides with the Armys sudden shift in recruitment policy, focusing on molding soldiers through training and service rather than put off potential applicants with “outdated” gym tests akin to that of old PE lessons. Again could be totally wrong, just what i take from it all.
