Probably a question for trained ranks but i'm sure experienced hikers could have some good ideas too.
now that recruit training is over (for the most part) I have been thinking about getting some new Camp/Field boots, as my altbergs are hanging on to life by a thread and my Haix are..well..Haix.
Are there any Camp or field boots that people would recommend, and why? ie popular brands used around units or regiments.
Heard some names thrown about (Lowa,Aku etc) but haven't looked into it too much as of yet.
Anything to help my fat, slug-like toes to withstand life in the corp, is greatly appreciated!

Cannot sing Hanwags praises any more. They were perfect for me, onto the hills fresh out of the box and had zero dramas with them for the 3 years Ive had them. They've been put through their paces and are looking a bit knackered now. I had a set of Canyons, the non-gortex version. Cannot recommend them enough as the best boot I've ever had, minus the price.

Bought some black Danner brand boots from the PX at Fort Bragg in 1980. Perfect camp boots; as comfy as slippers. But choice in the UK was v. limited back then. The choice being boots DMS or boots DMS. :(

As an aside, back in the day in NI some blokes wore Doc Marten boots on urban patrols or when dossing about Bessbrook Mill. Useless out in the sticks though. The new patent leather versions look cool but not available in brown, sadly.

I would hold fast until at your company as you may have a CSM / RSM that wants issue only boots in camp, so would advise against it until you know how the ground lie,s ..once you have been at unit a couple of months you will know and also be able to look at the one,s lads are using!

Ah just the sort of thing I was looking for. I'll have a little read up on these, thanks!

Noted. This is why these forums are so good - can't beat advice like this. Much appreciated and will definitely hold out on getting some

I've managed to procure some Aku's through the supply chain and can vouch that they are very comfy, lightweight and pretty waterproof. I've seen a few brown ones issued to Royals but managed to get black ones which seem to be rarer.

I've only heard good things about Aku's, and will probably end up wearing them as camp boots at some point I reckon!

Mate. I managed to get my Haix swapped out for some Bates before leaving CTC. Real comfortable camp boots I find.

Also, I wouldn't worry about buying boots. Depending on what your unit is doing but chances are, if you're prepping for deployment you'll get issued another set of boots. I've currently got the Cold Weather and Desert issue Ituri boots. As field boots go, I love the cold weather Ituri. Went straight onto mountain training with them fresh out the box and didn't have an issue.

Point being, you probably won't have to wait long til you have access to different brands of boots. Personally I'd rather have a decent daysack or jacket because pussers are toilet, whereas the boots are workable.

Cheers for the reply mate, if i'm honest theres just so much new 'stuff' I can now that it can be overwhelming in a way. It's not like 'oh you're in phase 2 heres a new kit list of stuff to get' kinda thing anymore i assume, so it's good to get opinions on what you actually need to buy/what you don't. Very useful

And get some 'approach shoes' to look cool when cutting about camp. La Sportiva do the best ones. Comfiest footwear I've ever had.

Ah good choice, My training team all have these. I shall definitely not be getting a pair whilst i'm around ctc for that exact reason and to avoid any unwanted attention! :D

Yer seen mate. Best advice, wait til you get to unit. See what the lads advise, if your going to buy kit its good to get eyes/hands on it beforehand. Buy stuff that works for you, not because somebody else looks good with it.

Also @Royal2010 nails it with approach shoes.La Sportiva and Scarpa's mega popular but I've got a decent pair of Arcteryx Konseals. Bombers!

This is rapidly turn into a decent kit pesting thread and its getting me excited!!

As this thread is related to boots, I decided to buy some second hand Altbergs of Ebay for a decent price and they stated Grade 1 condition for the soles, only problem is the wear isn't even on the heel of the boot and they have more tread worn on the inside of the heel.

Anyway I can even them out DIY style?

Don’t mess with them or you’ll knacker them and the cost of getting them resoled will be more than you paid for them.

Does the wear pattern match that on your own boot soles?

Altberg offer a resole service but it might not be economic depending on what you've already paid.

Other specialist resoling services might be significantly cheaper.
Most definitely not, looks like wear from carrying heavy weight so it's more on the inside of the heel.

Cheers for the link I'll check it out and see, won't be using them for more then a month do I may just give it a shot myself.
