Just seen an article in The Times that says that there will be no arctic training in Norway next year, due to lack of funds. Anyone know if this is just a rumour?

Seems pretty terrible, given that the RM are supposed to be the UK's specialist arctic troops.

That would be a shame. Maybe if they stopped sending Pongo's out and setting up dedicated RMR exercises and just have them attach to Regular ones, if at all.

They can save money by stopping OTC doing jumps and slash their budget. Or just scrap it.

Politics man, politics. So much mismanagement.

That's disgraceful, our cold weather specialists not training in the cold for a year. I swear the last couple of governments couldn't care less about the defense of the UK or our place in the world.

It's actually rather nice of Russia Today to raise the issue with regard the UK capability to stem the flow of their marauding hordes crossing the frozen Steppes.

During the Herrick years, the more astute "unofficial spokesperson" may have noticed the Norway Thing wasn't happening anywhere near annually due to financial constraints and operational overstretch.

Let's hope Mrs May reads RT, or indeed this forum and decides to bung a £billion Eastward as well as Westward.

My worry is that the government has cut numbers massively which is crazy. They spend billions on new kit, but fancy weapons won't help if we can't even get involved in a conflict because we simply don't have the man power. We are weakening our power projection. As well with the Russophobic propaganda being spun in the West, one would think the government would be desperate to have Marines in Norway to have them prepared for the coming hordes of Russians rushing into Europe ;)

Norway and Unit level has indeed gone next year..just smaller sub units going to do per-arranged bit with other nations - The Bold Alligator will also be much smaller and shorter..rumor mill says down to 3 weeks only..!!and primarily because it is the only Amphib exercise next year is the only reason it,s been kept..

but we can spend millions not getting a single female in..(so far)..!!..fishing,!!;)

The navy has a deficit in funding, and recruiting talent, as do the army. Which is why all the large scale exercises seem to be going, watch this space for how that will effect retention.

Disgusting! We have the vengeful hordes of Russians about to storm Scandinavia and the DPNK about to blow up the entire world from the Korean peninsula and we are forced to cut our arctic and amphibious exercises! We better hope the next threat comes from Scotland in a light drizzle!

Sorry lads, we can't afford decent quality worthwhile training, but we can afford to pay for some toff officers to sit around and eat caviar and be yes men to politicians and babysit some women through a token effort "research" programme to give an answer the politicians already want, while ignoring all the actual facts.

I'm surprised someone isn't blaming Global Warming for making Norway too hot to do winter training in.

So many excuses out there, I'm not sure I like the plain old budget cuts truth. It's like the Politician's can't even be bothered to lie anymore. -yawn-
