Been looking at various units and pathfinders is one that looks pretty good

Was wondering if anyone has any background on them like their role in afghan, selection and also of it's possible for a marine to join them.

Pathfinders are apparently tri service, so in effect anyone can apply to join. However, it is an Army unit and not offered as an SQ with the RM, so you would have to transfer over, after completing a return of service and with the recommendation of your RM boss, who will not give it if he feels your not up to the standard required.

If your heart is set on them, why not join the Parachute Regiment and enter from there, which I would suspect would be an "easier" route than joining the Corps, passing RT, joining a Unit, impressing your Boss and then applying, all of which will take you several years.

Mountain Leaders are para trained and carry out a similar role, i.e. the forward eyes of Brigade, albeit not many of them pass selection. Plenty of threads on here about them, plus search for "Behind the Lines" for a series on their training.

@Chelonian maybe able to help on the role of the Pathfinders, other than jumping from a perfectly serviceable aircraft.

A mate went on a briefing and said a few marines were there. Reference transferring over, he was told he could return to his original cap badge later on if he wished (he's currently in the army)

Why not go ML3, or ML? Or Brigade Recce?

Get your green lid first, then worry about the Gucci stuff ;)
This might be a bit of a daft question mate, what's the difference between, ML3 ML & brigade Reece? Just curious how the specs differ.

Put simply, in WW2 Parachute Regiment Pathfinders originally parachuted into hostile territory to light Drop Zones with flares so that battalion, brigade and division parachute insertions could be done with a modest amount of accuracy.
I understand that the modern primary role of Pathfiners is now reconnaissance although @Mole may be able to give you current information.

As @Caversham suggests, enlisting in the Royal Marines with the intention of being a Pathfinder is a convoluted path indeed (pun intended).

As alluded to by @ThreadpigeonsAlpha similar roles exist within the Royal Marines. Assuming that a RM career is your primary interest, consider researching career path options.
Best of luck.

ML3 is a Recce Operator - Marine Level. Working within Recce Troop, Command Company in a unit.
ML is a Mountain Leader - Cpl level.
Brigade Recce Force is comparable to Pathfinders, mostly MLs and ML3s working with other SQs (Medics, AEs etc) and Army Commando elements.

Thanks for that mate, sounds like a very good role. I can imagine it's quite a sort after SQ.

Yeah PF is a reconnaissance platoon. Selection cadre is 6 weeks, doing the same tests on the hills as SF. Other than that don't know too much about them

Read Maverick One by David Blakely, it's basically all about Pathfinder Selection

And X Platoon by Steve Heany is good too

Usually there's an on Unit aptitude course.
Usually loads of phys, military skills tests, Kim's Games (memory testing) with a bit of Aircraft/Vehicle/weapon identification, observation stance then some more
Phys.
A map test stance and test with the Snipers.
A day and night Navex and a yomp.

From there you get put forward to the ML3 course at CTC. Which is a more in depth course.

Admittedly I'm over thirty years out of date but reconnaisance soldiering billets are not the sole preserve of Pathfinders. Keep an open mind about what you might specialise in though because not everyone enjoys the cold and wet that is often associated with recce roles.

I did recce selection in 2001. You were an RL then. The ML3 thing is new. Most ML’s are in the job they want to be in within the Corps. The blokes I knew that did SF selection from the ML world passed. SF selection in they’re opinion was easier than the ML2 course.

Just concentrate on getting in the Corp first mate.

And read up on your military knowledge and the Royal Marines current affairs plus orbat before you do.
