I know there’s other places like bovington for armoured support and Yeovil for CHF but I’d assume there only possible placements once specialised for that specific role?

First off they are Drafts - you get drafted to a unit (location) by manning otherwise known as Drafty.! In theory you can go to any location that requires GD marines - but in the main you will go to the units above a sthey have by far the biggest GD manning requirement.

If you get drafted to 30, it will be as a driver, or one of those other less-desirable jobs iirc.

Yep you'd only go 30 straight out the box as GD driver. Otherwise its all Specialists. There arent any GD roles there otherwise

Knowing you'd go as a GD Driver do you think its worth putting down 30 as your preference if thats where you hope to be later on in your career? or go elsewhere then get to 30 later down the line?

My guess is that people will be dodging driver at all costs, I believe it is one of the most unpopular SQs (is it an SQ?). I saw on Instagram somewhere a guy saying he got "pinged for drives 2 weeks before he was due to go to SFSG". Don't know if it is genuine but if it was that's pretty unlucky.
