    Am I right in thinking that the USA were a contributing factor as to what started the conflict to ensue in Afghanistan?

    Afghanistan had been an unstable country for centuries, and in 1978 a civil war began in Afghanistan between pro and anti communist forces.

    Then the Soviet Union sent in military forces to support the communists.

    During this fight the USA provided money and military assistance to those fighting the Soviets.

    The Mujahideen were strongly opposed to the Soviet invasion.

    One million or more Afghans died and this lead to warlords and extremist groups seeking control of the country in the coming years.

    By assisting in the conflict against the soviets which inturn resulted in many deaths, did the USA fuel the fire for future events such as 9/11?

    I'm just trying to make sense of this incase it comes up in my interview tomorrow.

    Thank you

    Are you applying as an officer? If not things like that probably won't be in your interview mate, concentrate on the corps and your knowledge about the job you're going into. Then also prepare some answers such as times you've had to work as part of a team, times you've had to lead, hard times and how you got through them, sports/hobbies/interests, fitness level and stats, whats your familys view on your joining? Do you have a partner and whats their view on your joining?

    The typical questions of knowledge are;
    How much are you paid? Whats the minimum service? Where does training take place? How long? What are the phases of training? What are the Commando units? Where are they located? What current exercises/operations have units been on? What year was the corps formed? Explain the Commando role of the RM and where it came from?
    Maybe just know what year Afghan started and ended.

    Hope that helps a bit and it goes well! If you are applying as an Office then crack on :P

    Edit; just read your other posts. sounds like are a load more prepared than most and you know all of the above that i said. Dont stress over things like the Afghan conflict you'll be fine, just don't be nervous, give clear answers, wear smart clothes give good eye contact and dont slouch in your chair :) Good luck man

    The CIA provided the at the time brand new stinger missile through Operation Cyclone, and trained the Mujahideen in its use in the mid 80's.
    This allowed a bunch of men riding on horseback armed with WW1 era rifles and scavenged ak's to take down Soviet helicopters stopping them from landing during operations or in strategic locations.
    It also meant that the pilots weren't able to conduct reconnaissance anywhere near as effectively as they understandably feared flying below a certain height.
    This denial of air superiority slowed down Soviet military capability so much so that their withdrawals began the next year.
