Is the stereotype of service members being smokers true in the Royal Marines?
If so is this also true of the Royal Marine Reserves?

Not really, not in this day and age. Although lads tend to take it up on Tour out of boredom or whatever reason.

I was partial to my trusty pipe and rum soaked tobacco.

Thanks for clearing that up, just wasn't sure what to expect in that regards.

You won’t get pressured into it. A lot of lads don’t smoke.

As a non smoker you will get threaders picking up the dog ends for inspections.

Oh Emm Gee! Trying to expunge that image from my mind.

Do your own thing. And don't worry about it. It's not a school playground. One doesn't need to smoke, drink alcohol or even swear. Just get sociable with the blokes you work with; respect the customs and habits of others and they'll respect yours.
Best of luck.

I am a smoker (though only going through the application process) but many of mates who are joining with me are not.

Think it comes down to the type of person you are. Certainly I don't think there's pressure to be or not to be a smoker

In my troop there's about 10 lads who smoke including me, I think lads who smoked socially before hand tend to pick up the habit, as the first few weeks there's a lot of stress and late late nights.

I smoked all though RT and can honestly say it did not noticeably affect me at all. However, a few years down the line, after being run over in Mutley Plain, Plymouth on a dhoby run and ending up in hospital, (don't ask!), I was told that if I didn't stop smoking then in 10 years I would not be able to run up a flight of stairs. That prophecy came home to roost and I stopped and have never looked back.

As @Chelonian says, do your own thing, but bear in mind that eventually it will have an effect on your health.

That's how I imagined the attitude to be ahaha, thanks.

Smoking adds nothing to your life! Here speaks a quitter!

Seriously though, my lad smoked/smokes and was PT Medallist in his Troop!

I like my first statement the best!

Anecdotal evidence only but there aren't many lads in front of me in BFTs / runs, and of those none are smokers*

As with everything, there are exceptions to the rule, but that's all they are.

*Edited to change runner to smoker as per @Collieryboy spot.

Surely there isnt that many if "..A lot of lads don't smoke." :D

I used to occationally smoke every single day ;)

It did really get into crawl space when I was lighting up just to have some virtue signalling ex smoker preach to me about how amazing their life has been since they stopped and how its so bad for you. -yawn-

I'm a huge supporter of personal choice. I really enjoy smoking! Such a shame its ruined by the huge Cancer suckfest! I have watched 4 people disintegrate from smoking related diseases in the RM, 2 of them under 30! I really wish I had never started then I wouldn't know how much I liked it. :(
