This is the first time I've seen the two ships pictured together. (Doubtless it's happened previously).

For those joining if you join a RM Assault Squadron (ASRM) these are the two most likely ships you'll serve on,together with HMS Ocean.(Pictured below)

(Note landing craft on the side)

Do bear in mind you can serve on a ship, much the same as a matelot for two or more years- in fact some Royal Marines prefer to serve on ships- many LC's do anyway.

OK for the clever guys (a standard POC question at AIB): How many different types of aircraft are pictured on HMS Ocean's deck & which service operates each?

I want to say, 3 types of aircraft with what looks like: Chinooks, Sea Kings and Lynxes.
Then I reckon its Fleet Air Arm for the Sea Kings and Lynxes and RAF for the Chinooks.

I'm probably completely wrong though

Of course there are women mate, most are RN....as I understand it, RM's are quite popular with the ladies.

I'd say four

Chinook- RAF Pilots
Lynx- Army, RN & RM Pilots
Gazelle (no longer in service)
Sea-King- RN (845 Squadron being the junglies who work directly in upport of the RM)

Who operates the Merlins & Pumas?

I agree with Ninja regrding the aircraft on deck.

As far as I know, ASW Merlins are used by the FAA and Puma's are currently being used by the RAF. Of Course, I could be completely wrong:¬D

You're 100% correct- go to the top of the Class!

how do you join a RM Assault Squadron? *text deleted*
Simply by filling out a drafting preference on the Joint Personnel Administration (JPA)
computer system by volunteering to serve in one of the ASRM afloat elements after completing Recruit Training.

Have to say I'm not sure on that one Dodger.

Logic would suggest that if Albion, Bulwark or Ocean were deploying under-manned, then the RMR would be tasked to augment the shortfall in trained manpower initially by asking for volunteers, then if unfulfilled, by mobilisation.

Your RMR unit themselves are better placed to advise on ASRM billets taken up by trained RMR personnel. Unfortunately, I specialise on the recruiting side rather than "in-career" options or opportunities.

If you cannot get a definitive answer on this just PM me & I'll get an answer from the correct source for you later next week.

OK next questions (I'm thinking of making this a daily quiz in it's own forum):

What are the designated titles of the RM Assault Squadrons embarked on the amphibious ships?

What types of Landing Craft are on/in the assault ships?
