I would love to be a sniper/mountain leader.

Of course I won't be getting my hopes up though as I imagine it's pretty hard to get in and there must be far too many applicants for places.

That makes two of us mate :D Yeah I've asked on here before and I think they've got a similar pass rate to SAS/SBS/SRR, ML2 training is 9 months I think and you've got to be a cpl. I think most go Reconnaisance Operator first and then ML. I've got to get in first though :D

The L115A1 is a new weapon? Thought it had been in service a while now. Might explain why its not a widely talked about sniper rifle.

Lad's let me tell you something about this bit of kit......it's FOOKIN AWESOME!!

We had Marines Snipers at the start of my trip (4 days left)
before they left they had to expend all there rounds 112 of them.

so naturally i volunteered to help. 8)

They have the same ammo as Apache Helo's.
50 cal rounds, we needed to be 6k away from any other ships for safety reasons and let me tell you, it is like a friggin hand cannon.

I had a bruise like you would'nt believe on my shoulder and a sore jaw due to the sheer power and sound of round.

i've fired the SA80, GPMG, AK47,FN, SLR. but nothing compares to this bit of kit,
They say it does'nt have to touch you to kill you, if it went say within a foot of your head, the velocity and vortex created behind the round would rip it off any way.......Pretty cool hey.

Sniper: How can you get to be one

How does becoming a Sniper go about in the Marines, Wasn't sure if it's something you can choose to do or do you get selected, or perhaps is it one of the specializations after 2yrs service?

Always been a fan of the Sniper but wasnt sure how it comes about being one.

Do your research! If you need to ask that sort of question you wont even get through the interview....let alone get a PRMC.

What you been smoking?

from what i can gather, its probably the hardest specialisation course out of the lot, briefly, you have to be recomended and selected for it. and have some time under your belt 5-6 years or so etc etc etc.

recce troop/ mountain leader would be the direction to take but sniping school, i hear, has the highest fail rate of all the specialisations

if you currently already shoot stuff like shotguns or airguns would that help with getting a invite to the course?

Guys please remember the site is about helping people. Yes there are endless amounts of knowledge out there somewhere or other on the net, but it saves time and effort to ask others and there is nothing wrong in that.

Just because we have seen the same question 50 times it doesn't mean that everyone has.

No.
Main failure i believe on sniper training is the survival part anyway. And the fact that firing a rifle is a bit diff to both the above ;)
If we got on with a bird free zone around the house though... I'd be sorted!

No...

I guess you would need to show an aptitude for it. As in, good aiming skills, hand to eye coordination, patience, endurance, not to mentioned all of the other skills required by a sniper.

I wouldn't think it would be the hardest, as in physically demanding, but in terms of technical skill it may be very hard.

Yeh lots of people fail the course, but even if you complete it without a pass, you will most likely be a snipers second man as a spotter.

Hey, I wanted to become a sniper as well, but i'm not sure how the selection works but I would guess to go through either recce troop or mountain leader. I do know that snipers as a specialisation have lots of applicants and also as people have said one of the highest fail rate.
I have found a video on youtube thats a good watch the last two parts are mainly about Royal Marine Commando Snipers and the course. Here are the links:

Spotters do all the work,
snipers mainly just pull the trigger,
spotters do all the distance and windage stuff I think.

i would concentrate on passing out boys before anything else, plus i see it as something you cant want or choose to do, its something you might be chosen for eventually.

and yes its not quite as simple and "cool" as people think, as said, most people fail on the survival/stalking parts etc etc.
