Right guys, it's getting a bit tiresome with people continually hijacking other threads and asking the 'sniper' question. To that end I'm putting this on here.

(some of you may recognise this from previous posts)

first things first, concentrate on getting to, and passing out of recruit training.

Right, every unit will run sniper acquaint courses internally, ie an A4 bit of paper will be put up in the galley saying about the course. Anyone with rank of Marine or Corporal can approach their sergeant major and ask him permission to go on the course. he says yes (if they're a good bloke) and they attend the course.

It is usually about 4-5 days long and is generally run by sniper/recce troop in each unit, and covers things like fitness, sleep deprevation, fitness, stalking, fitness, camoflague and concealment, fitness, observation, fitness etc. did i mention theres fitness involved? you get the idea. You will get woken up during the night to do circuits or go for runs, not to test your fitness, but to make you sleep deprived to see how you cope with some of the mental (written and practical) tests, and with the field skills mentioned.

It's not a scored event, or a pass or fail, the sniper/recce troop have a certain number of spaces to fill, but they will only take people that they think have the aptitude to be in sniper troop.

Once you're in sniper troop, you will be there for a while, maybe as much as 4-5 months before your sniper course comes up.

Once it is, you will then go to CTC to do the PW3s course (or sniper course as it is known)

THAT IS HOW YOU BECOME A SNIPER.

    sniper in marines

I'm interested in becoming a sniper in the marines and have a few questions:

do snipers get paid more than a general soldier of thier rank?
can snipers be promoted to sargeant?
do snipers serve on their own or still with thier troop or just with a spotter?
can you join as a sniper straight away?
do snipers have a better chance of joining the sas or sbs?

A lot of ambition for sniper I see.
Snipers will go up the ranks just as fast as others. As I believe you will be trained as a marksman but that will not be your only duty, you will serve on patrol (if I am correct). All SAS and SBS selection is thesame for everyone no matter who you are or what specialty. Being a sniper may only give you a slight edge on fitness IF you push yourself. It seems you may be getting ahead of yourself though. Take it one step at a time, but also do not lose the dream of SF if that is what you wish to do, go for it.

You also serve two years as a general duties marine before specialising.

should have seen it before this thread mate :eek:h:

"Get the golden dragunov on COD4"

Was the official answer to questions like, "how do i become a sniper?" and "can you specialise as a sniper straight away" and "what are the requirements to get onto sniper training" (or mountain leader/SBS/SAS selection/training) were favourites too.

    Thank you montfish :praise:

really winds me up, no, i'm pretty damn sure sniping in real life is NOTHING compared to Dragunov's and R700's on call of duty...stupid morons...:uglyhammer:

    Hey

I was wondering how old do you have to be to become a sniper and how long do you have to serve before being able to become 1

Real life sniping is bloody hard, but thankfully I'm amazing at everything.

Until you pick up a rifle and fire that first shot just looking down the sights, you think that what you target is what you hit, but you need to account for countless factors, including and not confined to: wind speed, direction, temperature, barometric pressures, and even whether you are breathing of not when you pull the trigger.

One thing that amazed me the first time I fired was being told about the vast effect gravity has on a round. Despite the high speed of the round, if you drop a round from your hand and it takes 1 seconds to hit the floor, firing a round from the same height horizontally will also see the round hit the floor at the same time.

I haven't played CoD too much, but accounting for the endless variables would be a mean feat.

I've always understood the hard part about sniping to be the fieldcraft and the patience required. Relatively speaking, the shooting is the easy part.

I know I don't have the tempremant to lie in wait for days, not moving, keeping eyes on the target and maybe taking a single shot with a bolt action rifle.

Give me something belt-fed... or a radio and fast air.

I used to want to be a sniper, pretty handy with a rifle and have a decent spread over 800m...but likewise the sitting around waiting is not what I wish to do these days.

Thankfully my experience thus far has been rounds down range, as opposed to stalking. Fatigue is never going to be pleasant when you're trying to get that one important shot.

    Hi guys~

First time posting here but i'm sure you'll see a few more of my posts/questions about the place (only found out about this forum today:laugh:)

But i was curious, To be a sniper do you need perfect (natural?) Vision?
i was talking to some friends, none of them have been in the military so i dont know how much of it is true, they said you need perfect natural vision to join as a Sniper.

with them saying Natural it makes me think, if i had Laser eye surgery to make my eyesight perfect i could still not apply for these? any advice would be helpful; thanks.

Don't want to crush your dreams but you're never ever going to be a sniper. Might sound harsh but I'm sick of all the people who come on here and say i want to be an SBS Sniper Recon man. To answer your question yes you need perfect vision (unaided) but i do believe you can have laser eye surgery.

and yeah maybe i wont be a sniper, i was just thinking of different ways to go once I'm actually in the Marines (Provided i Pass).
Trying to decide if its best to get Laser eye surgery before applying, or go without.

Laser Eye surgery , providing it is an acceptable version, is a bar to service for at least 12 months, post operation.
