I'm sure they do, I'm pretty sure they carry their sniper rifles in a bag on their back for when needed. And yeah they still do the same tours, I'm sure it's only SF who are just called upon when needed.

All Royal Marines can be called upon when needed. It's pretty much the reason for their existence.

Look up The Falklands 1982 or DR Congo 1998 for 2 examples.

Also, is being a sniper an actual specialisation? Only I couldn't find it in the marines brochure.

I think that one of the reasons that people are fascinated by the profession of being a sniper is the fact that snipers must be freaking terrifying on the battlefield, it's that lone wolf mentality that many younger ones (I myself am 15 but i do not believe that i have that "Rambo" mentality) have that drives people to want to be a sniper to have that capability to remain hidden and make the enemies lives hell.

Just too give some people an idea, I was on ex and we had to secure a bridge. I was a part of the leaders recce and we met up with a recce det (snipers included) I was carrying what you guys call a gpmg so I set up in the snipers hide overlooking the bridge. Wasn't really a comfortable place to be, I laid /sat there for around 8 hours I can tell you it's not very amusing. Having said that the snipers were there for four days and they just watched some "enemy" walk across the bridge a couple times.

Long story short we seized the bridge, the snipers never fired a round and froze their backsides off as this was all done in the -25 to -40 range. O the joys of the Canadian army.

I really cant understand why this specialization drives so many people to want to do it.....the reality is, you will be laid up in an OP for as long as it takes to gain the information required or the obvious whilst laying in your own urine ect freezing cold on hard routine, no hot scoff, brews, warm kit, little sleep ect. before i passed out of depot we did a couple of night ambushes on exercise, both lasted around 8 hours of just laying there fighting to stay awake, absoloutley freezing......for me and the rest of the blokes that was tough! my point is, why snipers?????

Does anyone have any first hand experience with snipers? The main thing that is confusing me at the moment is day to day roles of snipers. The way snipers are portrayed in the media and that documentary make it seem as if they work in pairs, always sniping. However, on documentaries like "Royal marines: mission Afghanistan" I see people with sniper rifles on patrol with other general duty marines. Are these people snipers, or are they just general duty marines using sniper rifles.
