Hi, was just wondering what specialisations will keep you on the front line. I hear the some commando specialisaitons mean that you dont actually go into action which confused me a little.
If I was to become an assault engineer does that mean that I will still use the weapon SA8O and be in action or will I be always be using stuff that has stuff to do with demolition?

Ah yeah I see, I was just a bit confused cause I was speaking to someone about it and they tried telling me that if I was to specialise in AE then I wouldn't be using a normal weapon and that my only job will just to sort out the demolition etc..

Who was telling you that? As an Assault engineer, your up close in a fighting company. AEs are in a normal troop as a fire team. Offering close combat engineer support.
From Person and Vehicle search, to counter IED, to Combat demolitions and Methods of entry.

Pongo (army) engineers do all the “boring” Engineer stuff. But as an AE you will be using the demolition stuff to blow doors in, blow Helicopter Landing Sites, or obstacles chainsawing trees down for winch holes, making range targets or wooden kill houses for CQB.

The clue is in the name. And anyone who says you won’t be using an L85 (SA80) as a soldier/marine doesn’t know what they are talking about. It’s your personal weapon.

Is this an SQ you will be looking at? No matter what your SQ, your always a Commando First. Don’t listen to the filthy Pongo recruiters.

Ah that's great to hear! The person that told me that was on youtube to be fair so I shouldn't of listened in the first place, he made it seem as if my whole duty was just doing the usual Assault engineer but no proper fighting. And yeah thats definitely a SQ I'm looking at!

Ah okay great! Just a quick question, So if I was to be an Assault engineer would it be every now and then I'll do the job of an AE and when there's no need for the AE I'll just be be a commando fighting?

Different SQs have different requirements. Some are with their own troops in different Companies, and not involved with Fighting Companies.

As an AE. You used to be in an AE Troop. And get attached to Companies as they deployed.
But now you will be a Marine in a fighting company. You will train and do all the usual stuff the Fighting company does. If you are required to use your AE skill set, then you will do so.
You will be required to keep up your AE skills yourself, and certain times will be allocated for continuation training with the rest of the AEs for more specialist skills.

You will also be used to give lectures/training on different topics for the Company, Counter IED, Tracking, Person and Vehicle search Method of Entry and other AE skills.

So yea, you will be “fighting”. You are close combat engineer support. And utilised by other SQs such as Mountain leaders for establishing routes in or Recce Troop, for minefield Recce’s.


In mega simple terms, if the Fighting Company comes across a building you will be the one breaching the doors, and room clearing with the lads.
