First off I hate to be bearer of bad news but unless you’re a diamond you probably won’t get to choose what unit you go to. But to answer your question that’s not really how specialisations work. 43 is different because they have a specific job role so they have no need for fire support group or mortar troop or anything like that. At the other units each has a mix of different specialisations in order to meet their requirements. Bare in mind that everything is changing due to future commando force, but in the old way of doing things at a unit let’s say 45 you would have 3-4 coys or squadrons, each made up of 3-4 troops of GD marines and the troop cpls/stripeys could be a range of different SQs. These are fighting troops. Then on top of that you will have fire support group (FSG) made up of heavy weapons, PW gunners, anti tanks etc. Then there’s also mortar troop, recce troop will consist of your MLs and snipers. Medics will be attached to most fighting troops etc. Each camp has a motor transport dept where the drivers live and stores where the store men live etc. Do you see where I’m coming from?

It probably still isn’t fully formed but is there any idea how FCF will affect the draft or the ping system.
It wont affect the drafting or pinging it will just affect he courses you can do. There is time in training for you to be told about how it all works.

The need for clerks, storeman and drivers etc won't go away. However its kind of been re branded. The biggest change has probably been that lads from CTC are being drafted as GD drivers straight out the box.

Yeah rebranded from clerks to Combat clerks...

Yer I'd love to have been a fly on the wall in that meeting.

"So gentlemen, if we put combat infront of every awful job, I'm sure those foolish marines will fall for it and welcome the ping with open arms. All in favour say aye!"

Ah. As in they arent taking on more clerks? As every company I've been too has had bootneck clerks. Is this going the way of the chefs branch where in years to come, coming across a bootneck clerk will be an absolute novelty?

I was still under the impression lads could get pinged for it.

Seems like a silly question, but what's a GD Driver's day to day like? Can't seem to find info about it.

What/where do they drive and for who?

Cheers

They provide transport for troops moving anywhere. Say from camp to a training area. Or moving their kit etc. It’s a pretty mind numbing job especially at ctc.

It depends where you are but drivers can actually be quite busy commando logistics support 3cdo brigade so wherever they go logs go with them. At the moment there is a new training cell being set up and it will be called mobility branch, but who knows what that will mean. I've heard it will move away from larger vehicles and use more smaller ones.

I’ve read somewhere on here that the new plan is to send new marines to either 43 cdo or CLR for their first draft to get experience. Is that the way it’s working now ?

Experience in what?

I get 43's requirements and understand that won't change. But new lads need to go into fighting units. End of. Imagine in two years when lads spent their first few years as a driver rocking up to a fighting unit, 100% they'll be worse than new lads fresh from training. Skill fade is a thing and in my opinion the current drafting is encouraging it.
