When you jump off the platform into the pool to do the set number of lengths do you have to dive or jump in, or either? And when you retrieve the brick from the bottom of the pool are you treading water and then do it or do you dive in to get it.

You step off the platform, entering water feet first.
You then from there swim a length, the width then a length(like a U shape) and finally you retrieve the brick. It’s all done as one sequence, you don’t come out the pool until your finished.
I’m not a great swimmer and was fine with it, just bare in mind it can be a shock how deep the pool is when you dive for the brick. Good luck

If you miss the brick the first time can you go back down again to try and get it, is there a limit to how many tries you have?

It depends if you are struggling due to fatigue or swimming ability. In most cases you would be permitted access second attempt but if clearly tired and a poor swimmer they may just list you as a weak swimmer who may be required to return and complete that element at a later date. In short, case by case.

I know things have changed since I joined, but is this an example of that excellence creep you've been on about? How are lads supposed to skim across the water? That's just not realistic!

    *I'll get my boat/coat :D

The auto-correct on my new Geordie (Huawei, man) mobile phone is driving me nuts.

I had 2 attempts but they were 1 after the other, there was no rest the Sgt in charge told me to get right back down.
Some of the weaker lads got held back to try again, majority ended up having to return to do the whole swimming test again

@Ninja_Stoker what swimming stroke do they have to do in the swimming test? My son seems to do breast stroke arms but kicks with his legs. He has time to change this and practise it differently before his PRMC so I thought it best to clarity. Thank you

Doesn't matter really. Front crawl is fastest but in training, if wearing kit, the only practical swimming style is breaststroke.
