Hello guys, I've just been reading this interesting 5 page article on RT and how it was modified to reduce injuries (stress fractures) and improve the end product (RM).

Summary:
The Fallowfield study resulted in a range of recommendations to CTCRM:
(1) select recruits depending on their aerobic power; (PRMC)
(2) stream recruits based on their physical ability; (PRMC)
(3) improve the progression of the physical training syllabus.

These measures were intended to reduce injury and training wastage, thereby improving first-time pass rates.

Well worth a read for those of you who want to understand how/why the training program is structured the way it is.

have read it now, thought this was quite interesting:
One of the most obvious changes introduced with the RCRS was that the Commando tests were moved from week 29 of training to week 25. The rationale for this change was that the recruits would be at their optimal aerobic fitness at this time, thus maximizing their chance of success.

During the study period, 3,574 recruits commenced Commando training. A total of 1,483 men joined under the original syllabus, and 842 (56.8%) of these completing training. A total of 2,091 men joined under the RCRS, and 636 of these have passed, a provisional pass rate of 47.5%. A total of 631 men remained in training when data collection closed. The current pass rate for the RCRS is 57%. The average age of those joining under the original syllabus was 20.8 years, compared with 19,5 years for those joining under the RCRS.

Of those joining under the original syllabus, 105 (7%) suffered a total of 109 stress fractures. Four men suffered more than 1 fracture, of which three cases were metachronous and one was synchronous. Of the RCRS recruits, 80 men (3.8%) suffered a total of 92 stress fractures. Twelve men suffered more than 1 fracture, of which six cases were metachronous and six were synchronous.

Decent find Priar,

Reassuring to see that todays armed forces throw a lot of science + research into planning their training structures, rather than just 'extra phys' recruits untill they break, like they did in the past.

It's in their interests as well like you say, less wastage and money spent on recruits who do not complete training.
