If you speciaslise in Landing Craft, you could spend a full sea-draft (27-36 months-ish) as part of the embarked Royal Marines detachment- 9 ASRM is 32 in number. The Squadron onboard contains specialists in boat driving, radio operating, driving and weapon instruction. Together they provide the ability to transport embarked landing forces in to battle.

The Squadron has 4 x Mk5B LCVP (Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel) embarked which are used to move war fighting equipment and troops ashore.

The Squadron supplies the capability to prepare and distribute equipment by air also with the help of the embarked helicopters.

The Royal Marines onboard are a part of the ship and because of this help in all aspects of life onboard a warship.

As embarked forces, there are annual exercises with 3 Cdo Brigade emabarked in specialist sections on Albion, Bulwark & Ocean for short durations of maybe up to two or three months every other year or so.

In short- it varies & it's entirely possible you may never serve afloat, but most guys do at some stage, even if only for a short two-week exercise.
