It probably is to the government who are allowing armed civilians to operate on British flagged vessels, perhaps thinking it's a cheap, private financed solution to the piracy problem without costly military intervention.

Meanwhile the Armed Forces are losing the cream of their trained ranks, drawn by higher wages & less risk, faster than we can recruit & train replacements. The shipping owners pass on the cost of guarding the cargo to the consumer.

A manning crisis awaits unless the long overdue retention incentives are introduced sharpish or until serving personnel are routinely deployed on UK vessels.

This is true, but then surely, in moderation, this is doing the government a favour with the cutbacks? Obviously they won't plan for costs in the future, rather save a little now but end up spending more 10 years down the line, but hey, this is the UK.

There were no planned reductions in the trained strength of the Royal Marines apart from a handful of senior officers at Lt Col or above.

The danger is the reduction in manpower could theoretically trigger a change forcing reductions in requirement once the Treasury realise it will cost a lot of money.

Ah right sorry, didn't actually read the article, from the title I just assumed it was across the board, I knew it was Lt Col and above that were being looked at.
