Weak lower back - Shin splints?

My physio seems to think so, he got me doing various stretches to which I experienced discomfort which isn't natural. He asked if I do any back exercises, aside from the pull-ups and what not I said no. I dont do any dorsal raises etc for example, and he claimed that this could be a reason for my shin troubles whilst running.

Anyone else have/heard of anything similar to this?

I believe core strength , hips etc all play a role in your posture whilst running and can lead shin issues, knee or hip problems etc. Read it a few times here and around the net, quite a few pre running conditioning ideas I have looked at all had core work in them.
