Just got the following in an email from my Mum (slightly awkward, but a true message):

Whitney Houston's death, while a sad thing, was the direct result of very unwise life choices.

It dominated the news.

Charlie Sheen is 45 and his story is all over the news because he is a
substance abuser, an adulterer, sexually promiscuous and obnoxious.

Lindsay Lohan is 24 and her story is all over the news because she is a
celebrity drug addict and thief.

Amy Winehouse?s story was all over the papers and shoved down our throats as she was a singer and ?celebrity? and a substance abuser.

Something as frivolous as Kim Kardashian's stupid wedding [and short-lived marriage] was shoved down our throats. While the following

Justin Allen 23
Brett Linley 29
Matthew Weikert 29
Justus Bartett 27
Dave Santos 21
Jesse Reed 26
Matthew Johnson 21
Zachary Fisher 24
Brandon King 23
Christopher Goeke 23
and Sheldon Tate 27...

are all British Royal Marines who gave their lives in Afghanistan for you. There is no media for them; not even a mention of their names.

Honour THEM!

Amen to that. It is sad that we live in a country where the death of celebrities seems to be dominate the headlines more than that of deaths of armed service members.

Excellent post. It can be a touchy subject at times but you conveyed it well here without causing too much offence to either side of the debate.
Ashamed to say I didn't remember any of these lads' names... will make a point of doing so now. They did so much more in just a few weeks/months of their tours, than most of Hollywood can claim to have done in their whole careers. There are some celebrities who DO pull their weight for good causes but these are few and far between, and grossly outnumbered by the men and women of the world's militaries and emergency services.

Indeed there are which i dont mind. It really does grit my Pooh when i see journalism focusing on the mundane crap that makes Briton so ill informed in the first place.

I'm terrible with names, but I try and remember their faces when I see them on the news, and you do recognise them when you a list of them all when they are remembered on Remembrance Day etc.

Yeah definitely - their faces always ring a bell when you see a pic on TV/online.

news coverage doesn't show that people honour them more than soldiers who die,

look when famous people die, a few minutes after people find out about the death of a celebrity thousands of jokes are being sent world wide,

when you hear about a soldiers death, no jokes are made, and their was this student who posted something bad on Facebook about the soldiers that died the other week, he got arrested,

the sad thing is soldiers are dying their every week, so newspapers are not going to run a story about that each week.

being on the news for a few weeks doesn't mean people honour you.

Good post that. I mean when a soldier gets killed, it always gets a mention on the BBC News, which to me is probably enough. What you were saying about them being killed every week so the media not going to run the story every week is true, and there's other things going on in the World for the news to tell us about, but I think the biggest issue I have is when these "famous" druggies die of their own stupidity, it dominates the headlines. If I was in charge of the news, they'd get a small mention after the important stuff.

Thank you. I say this all the time. When Whitney died I posted on a lot of Facebook updates saying the same thing. There was even a massive hype about some emo girl who killed herself and I posted moaning that she shouldn't get that publicity when soldiers die so often and get nothing - I was banned from Facebook for it.

I really don't care. I have no time for them. These people are idiots, they are weak, they don't deserve the time of day. There are real Heroes out there who die or are severely injured, at times almost on a daily basis. I have no time for people who take their lives for attention or overdose on narcotics.

Frankly I don't care if people are offended by this post. There are better men and women on this planet who don't get as much as a few turned heads.

Rest in peace to any soldier who has given their life for their country, friend or foe.

I'm not even going to try to get involved. But I hope you have a little more respect for the soldiers who give their lives for, what they truly believe is, your freedom and happiness.

If you dont. Bah.

I'd like to see even 1% of the population willingly give their lives for the greater good of their fellow man. Quote the thread title - who should we remember?

That's not what I said. My issue is with the person being arrested, which specific crime did they arrest him for?

Although i agree very much so about this thread i must point out that like most people(i too was part of this crowd) when a celebrity dies(especially one who has abused their life) we quickly go into offence mode and go on about soldiers risking their lives and getting nothing in return. QUITE RIGHT!!

But alot of us need to realize that People don't make themselves celebrities, WE(as people) make people celebrities, by fascinating ourselves with them, of course the media doesn't help but at the end of the day if people didn't spend so much attention to these people they wouldn't be celebrities and they wouldn't be in the media getting shoved down our throats each day.

Now im not standing up for celebs (not in the slightest), everytime i browse the channels and keeping up with the kardashians comes on im like to myself "who the actual hell are these people? One of them is an actress/porn actress..i think? Why are the rest of them on my screen!!??"

The reason they are is because of little Suzie down the road with her bedroom full of Justine Bieber posters care about celebrities lives more about her own.

OK to the point, its pointless ranting and raving about Whitney Houston saying shes a waste of space, she doesn't deserve to be on my screens etc! Because at the end of the day we as people are given them the time of day...

RANT OVER:thefinger:

I think the point jm745 might be getting to is what was the actual reason he got arrested for? Because these days freedom of speech goes a long way in the country, just look at the Muslim extremists from Luton, burning poppies etc and they seem to get away with alot.

Although i suppose they could charge him on grounds of inciting hatred. But then its strange that they would arrest him when what i mention above:confused:
