Long Ambition Cut Short

I want to join the Royal Navy as a Mine Clearance Diver for 5-6 years before i try for the Royal Marines, This is a stepping stone towards my goal to become a member of the Special Boat Squadron hopefully if i pass the 32 weeks commando training, If i succeed UKSF Training I'd like to join Z SQUADRON, that's when my diving would come back into hand for me.

People give honest views on what you think, do you think this is the best way for me to go about the Royal Navy, Royal Marines and SBS?

thats a pretty big ambition and if your up for it then bloody well go for it.
just a thought though, you can join the navy and become a navy commando by doing the all arms commando course. that way you dont have to leave the navy and go through 32 weeks of training and lose your current wage etc. you can transfer straight over to the marines, and that way you can also go straight into another specialisation.

hope that makes sense

Ohh i didnt know that but i think thats what the AFCO was trying to explain but it makes sense in text haha. But on wikipedia it says that i only have the right to wear the Green Beret and Commando Badge Dagger it hasnt said anything to do with choosing a specialization after general duties.

As zz said you would be able to wear the green beret when serving with the marines, but display your commando flashes at all times.

My diving instructor was special forces and he did that, not sure exactly as he wouldnt say. However he started out life as a para.

If that is what you wanted to do i do not think it matters where you start but if you started in that career then applied for special forces i should think that you would definetly have a starting advantage.

Well i dont know much about this All Commando's Course and its hard to research. It keeps saying that it's the army's artillary, 29 COMMANDO.

I would like to do my All Commando's Course with having experience as a Mine Clearance Diver.

Oh okay sorry.

According to the RM Recruiting Officer the RM's would'nt let me do my All Arms Commando Course because they dont need Royal Marine's as Mine Clearance Divers because they dont use them in 3 Commando.

And he said you dont become a Royal Marine because you want to be one.

Everytihng he said was true though.

I assume you want to do this as you have a passion for diving?
I should think that if you were up to the standard required then it would be possible for you to do this whether a Royal Marine or a Royal Navy diver.

Thanks Rob but apparently Mine Clearance Divers can't do the All Arms Commando course thats what the RM Recruiting Officer said, I asked them and thats what he said. But it would be unique if i became a Mine Clearance Diver/Royal Marine/Swimmer Canoeist could you imagine that title.

I want to join the corps to specialize in different areas but i think they're narrowing me down to just one specialization, But my long term goals aside im *text deleted* just concentrate on the Mine CLearance at the moment.

Interesting

This is an interesting conversation, but you have to ask yourself:

If you want to become a diver and join the marines and then the SBS, why not just join the Corps, pass out, do a couple of years in a commando unit to get some experience under your belt and then apply for the SBS.

Alternatively, they have changed the route into SBS so that any branch of the armed forces can apply.

Lets put this straight. If your in the navy you can only do the all arms commando course if your a medical assistant. I think thats right but wait for ninja to tell you the right answer.

No, I'm saying join the corps, passout, get soldiering experience under your belt and then apply for the SBS. The diving bit would be learn't with the SBS.

I think stokers can aswell? I heard they are deploying to Afghan with the RM because there is a shortage of RM VM's.
