Apologies for adding what seems like the 10th medical thread just this week, but I'm after some advice.

Had my medical last Thursday and everything went well until the Doc noticed I had a case of scoliosis. She put together some pieces, took some pictures and sent it off and said it would go for review with a Senior Doctor (I assume within the service) who would judge it based on long term risks etc, I'm definitely not holding my breath.

Obviously I want to mitigate the long term health issue that could be associated with having a mong back - do you reckon I should do this through my GP whilst I wait for the report to come back from the Senior Doctor? It's a fine line between speeding up potential recovery (if there is any possibility of recovery) and potentially having a mountain of honking med reports.

    Appreciate anyone's non-professional opinion.

Well, here's mine then. I'd wait to see what response you get and review the matter. You'll then have the benefit of knowing the service decision relating to your specific circumstances rather than attempting to guess it.

Medical standards for entry are published in the public domain. @Ninja_Stoker or @The guide might post up the appropriate link if they spot this.

    Best of luck.

    You need to search for

    JSP 950 MEDICAL POLICY LEAFLET-
JOINT SERVICE MANUAL OF MEDICAL FITNESS

Then read Annex K, namely paragraph 27-29.

I’ve copied and pasted the relevant paragraph below for you-

    Spinal Conditions

    27. General. Normal structure and function of the spine is an essential requirement for military
service. The following spinal conditions must be given careful consideration.

    28. Structural abnormality of the spine. Candidates with minimally abnormal scoliosis , kyphosis or lordosis with no associated back pain with full and free movement of all spinal segments (cervical, thoracic and lumbar) may be graded L2.

29.Candidates with scoliosis or other curvature requiring treatment, that is associated with an on- going disease process/neuromuscular or neurological dysfunction or back pain are to be graded P8U8 or P8L8 as appropriate (bar from joining)

    Best of luck.

Many thanks Johnny, really helpful. I've got the JSP open in-front of me and will keep it in mind. I feel as if my range of movement is not hindered in any form and I experience no back pain of any sort.

I haven't seen a specialist as yet but I will await the Service's view and go from there.
